CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT
OVERVIEW
Continuing from a strong summer the playing side of the club has continued to grow in strength and numbers. Although the early part of the season has seen results best described as mixed there have plenty of encouraging signs.
TEAMS
1’ST X1
Having played three league games so far its one win, one draw and one defeat for Matt Jones team. I get a sense of frustration in the results as the general opinion is that they should have done better. This is a strong and dedicated squad with a good mix of youth and experience. It may take them time to gel but Matt and I are confident they can only get better.
2ND X1
Already knocked out of the AFA cup (although I still don’t know how!) the seconds have played twice in the league. A home defeat to a side who have been promoted two leagues and a very strong (Mill Hill County) and a draw against last years champions (Old Aloysians). The football played by the 2’s has at time been great to watch. Like the senior side there is a strong dedicated squad forming who clearly are enjoying playing. If we can keep these guys together this side has every chance of promotion.
3rd X1
Having started a week later than the top two sides, the 3’s opened with a fantastic 2-0 league win over Old Bealonians. Dave Wilson was hopping this would inspire them in the AFA cup against Old Brentwoods on Saturday but they faced a stronger side and the first game at the bay ended in defeat. The 3’s are a bigger and better side than last year and the first league game proved we have plenty to be encouraged about.
4th X1
The fixture computer has meant that the 4th’s have only played one league fixture, this was a defeat to Southgate Olympic. The squad is very different to last year and with major changes higher up the club Jason Pinkett is still trying to tie down which players will be his. There has been an influx of new players into the side and I am sure they will come together in time.
For the Saturday sides the big bonus has been in the numbers. Despite a long injury list we have been able to fill full sides with substitutes for most. The challenge is not to lose this enthusiasm.
VETS
Until last week I was not worried about the VETS. Following the postponement of the BBCC match its clear this is one are of the club we have to work on. The squad seems to have dived in numbers and there are a number who are still performing to a high standard on a Saturday afternoon. You would expect there to be a natural injection of players but we simply do not have guys in their mid 30's. I suggest we need an urgent meeting with Ajay/Lev as to the immediate future of the Vets.
The VETS early season has also been dominated by the unfortunate injury to Dean Nye. I am sure you will all join me in wishing him the speediest of recoveries.
SELECTION
This year we have brought back the Monday night selection meeting and I am pleased to report that so far this has been a success. The communication among the Saturday captains has improved and although there are one or two examples of players being missed or guys playing in wrong sides it’s a procedure we will continue. This has lead to the reinstatement of the teamsheet. Again despite minor problems this has clearly improved our lines of communication with the players.
TRAINING
After a strong summer programme I am delighted to report that numbers have not dropped off despite the move to Trent Park. Over the past two weeks we have had an average of 21 people, the only blip during the past four weeks was when thunder and lighting scared a number of guys off. What has been very pleasing is all the new faces who have come and from a personal point of view its good to see that they are enjoying themselves.
KITS/TRAINING TOPS
The top two sides have taken delivery of their new season kits and the feedback has been positive. The 3’s and 4’s are wearing different kits to last season and our away strip has already been used twice.
The initial order for training tops was for 16 different people and today I put in a further order for another 14 tops. This means that nearly half the club will own a top.
All in all I am please to report a club much stronger on the playing side than we have had over the past 12 months.
